(Oceanside, Calif.) - June 18 - Stand up paddlers from 12-years-old to 40-plus, from both coasts and Hawaii took to Oceanside’s North Jetty to compete in the Toyota USA Stand Up Paddleboard Championship today.
Four-time individual ISA SUP Racing Gold Medalist and Pan Am Games Silver Medalist Candice Appleby won the women’s SUP open, riding out of tricky maneuvers to easily win the final.
“USA Surfing SUP Championship is a top-notch event. So well run, and always a good time,” said Appleby. “It was so great to see all of my sup family from California and Hawaii. I just love how this event, and sport, brings together so many amazing people who absolutely love the ocean.”
Pan American Games Bronze medalist Daniel Hughes said, “Today was so awesome, felt great to be back, my first event since 2019, we were blessed with some really fun waves and good competition! Being able to see everyone made my day, especially seeing all the groms come out and watching them crush the waves, seeing how much they have improved over the last year! I better watch out!”
One of the impressive groms Hughes was talking about is 12-year-old Bobo Gallagher from Oahu, who pretty much rides anything in the ocean - wing foiling, sup, and kiting.
Conditions were clean with occasional shoulder to head-high sets.
After a one-year Covid hiatus, all the SUP surfers were stoked to be back in jerseys and competing.
